I’ve taken the liberty of creating fun lesson plan packets to supplement my books. Each packet is filled with engaging activities that, along with the books, are sure to inspire and empower your youth! The Thank an Inventor Series lesson plans are available in either a K-5 bundle packet or individual grade level packets. Each packet consists of at least five activities per grade level that will cover the following subject areas: STEM, Math, English Language Arts and Art. I Am Because I Choose lesson plans are available in a single packet consisting of eight separate Social Emotional Learning activities which focus on Choices/Decision Making, Consequences, Empathy and Compassion, Courage and Race Relations. Additionally, Dandi McLion Has Her Say lesson plans are available in a single packet consisting of 10 separate STEM, Social Emotional Learning and Character Education activities which focus on Courage, Empathy, Race Relations and Voicing your Opinion. Activities included in this resource:
- Choose Empathy – students will learn how to exercise empathy and compassion in their decision making.
- Courage Box – students will learn that it is important to exercise courage in both words and action.
- Take A CALMER Approach – students will learn to manage and control their anger by using the CALMER anger-management model.
- So Jelly – students will have fun making delicious dandelion jelly.
- We Wear the Mask – students will learn that a person’s skin color isn’t as important as who they are on the inside.
- I Can Use My Voice – Students will write a letter to a community leader about an issue that is important to them.
- Madlibin’ – Students will have fun using vocabulary by completing a Madlib.
- Math Decoder – Students will solve mathematical problems to decode a secret message.
- My Opinion Matters – Students will write an opinion piece that includes a statement of opinion, reasons to back up the opinion and a conclusion.
- What’s the Truth? – Students will use reading comprehension to determine whether statements are true or false.

- Is It A Good Choice or A Bad Choice – students will engage in a fun game that helps them to identify the difference between good and bad choices.
- You Choose Your Consequence – students will identify possible consequences that could result from particular choices made
- Choose Wisely – students will learn how to make good decisions using the TAT Decision Making Model
- Choose Empathy – students will learn how to exercise empathy and compassion in their decision making
- Choose Courage – students will learn that it is important to exercise courage in both words and action
- Mistakes Don’t Have to be Monsters – students will learn how to overcome poor decision making using the STORE model
- We Wear the Mask – students will learn that a person’s skin color isn’t as important as who they are on the inside
- I Am Uniquely Special – students will learn some of the wonderful things that help to make Black people in America unique

- Can You Build It? – Engaging STEM activity which allows students to practice the engineering process by modeling a pyramid using building blocks.
- Is It an Inventor or an Invention? – Fun activity where students identify if illustrations are an invention or an inventor (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book).
- Matching Worksheet –Fun activity where students match picture of invention with the name of the invention (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book).
- Pick One! – Fun activity where students cut and paste pictures of inventors and inventions in the correct box (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book)

- Can You Build It? – Engaging STEM Activity where students will practice the engineering process by modeling a pyramid using building blocks.
- Dot to Dot – Fun activity that incorporates both math and art. Students count by 10’s to complete the dot to do then color the picture.
- The Memory Game – Fun activity that promotes reading comprehension and retention through memory of the inventors and their inventions (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book).
- Check the Rhyme – Wonderful ELA activity where students will recognize and produce rhyming words (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book)
- Thank You! – Using art, students will highlight an invention from the book that they’re most thankful for.

Activities included in this resource:
- Paper Weight – Awesome and engaging STEM Activity where students make observations and explore phenomena by testing the strength of paper folded into differently shaped columns.
- Math Decoder – Fun Math Activity where students solve math problems then use their answers to decode a secret message.
- Invention Vocabulary – Using a dictionary or glossary, students will alphabetize and define new vocabulary words, then select at least 5 of those words to be used in a realistic fiction story that they will write about an invention (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book).
- Invention Chain – Using art, students will highlight their favorite inventors by creating an invention chain, then sharing why they selected each inventor with the class.
- **Use Your Context Clues! – Wonderful ELA activity where students will determine the meaning of words based upon the context of the sentence (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book).

- Invention Vocabulary – Using a dictionary or glossary, students will alphabetize and define new vocabulary words, then select at least 5 of those words to be used in a realistic fiction story that they will write about an invention (This activity is text specific. - Use Your Context Clues! – Wonderful ELA activity where students will determine the meaning of words based upon the context of the sentence (This activity is text specific. As such, there are separate worksheets to supplement each book).
- Inventor Hat – Using art, students will highlight their favorite inventor by making an inventor hat.
- Thank You Inventor! – Using a letter writing graphic organizer, students will write a friendly letter to their favorite inventor.
- Bridging the Gap – Engaging STEM Activity that allows students to participate in the engineering process by building a bridge from Popsicle sticks and recording their observations.

- If I Could Thank an Inventor.. – Students will demonstrate their command of writing and language by using a writing prompt and expository pillar to complete an essay on which inventor they’d like to thank and why.
- Lactic Plastic – An engaging STEM activity where students will explore simple elements of chemistry by using milk to create plastic.
- Inventor Acrostic Poem – Students will create an acrostic poem about the character traits needed to be a good inventor.
- Invention Diorama – Using art, students will create a diorama showcasing their favorite inventions and the different ways in which it can be used.
- Vocabulary Building – Students will build their vocabulary skills by completing sentences with correct vocabulary words.
